This document is the working compilation of the Human Xenobiological Field Guide (HXFG) - the Terran Xenobiological Survey Commission's ongoing effort to document the sapient species of the galactic federation from a human perspective, for human readers.
The HXFG is not a translation of the federation's own species archive. It is our own work: compiled by human field researchers, xenobiologists, diplomats, linguists, and the occasionally overqualified graduate student, drawing on federation records but filtered through human experience, human analogy, and human concern. Where the federation archive is comprehensive and neutral, the HXFG is selective and opinionated. We document what humans need to know, in the order humans need to know it, explained the way humans explain things to each other.
The guide currently covers a fraction of the federation's 1,137+ registered sapient species. Entries are added as field research, diplomatic contact, and editorial review permit. Priority has been given to species with whom humanity has significant ongoing interaction.
